Friday Thought Leadership

“A great leader never sets himself above his followers except in carrying responsibilities.” Jules Ormont

Of course, we all have responsibilities as part of a team. However, the team leader bears the responsibility for the team’s success. The leader is responsible for accomplishing the mission and caring for the individual team members. It can be lonely at the top. I just reread Stephen Ambrose’s best-selling book “D-Day June 6, 1944: The Climatic Battle of World War II.” GEN Dwight Eisenhower alone was tasked to decide to launch the invasion in the face of bad weather. With the best input from multiple subordinates and the best weather data available, he decided to go, knowing the fate of hundreds of thousands of coalition and civilian lives was at stake. Following his decision, he penned a note stating he and he alone were ultimately responsible. Imagine the weight of the world on his shoulders that day!
